Dental Implants

Missing teeth can negatively affect the appearance of your smile, the strength of your bite, and your self-confidence.

Fortunately, dental implants can restore missing teeth from the root to the crown, renewing patients' smiles.

Our dentists at Jensen Elledge Dental in Santa Fe, NM, regularly transform smiles with dental implants. Could implants be right for you?

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Durability and Longevity

Once dental implants are in place, they are remarkably durable. You will be able to eat all of your favorite foods with worrying about prosthetics slipping out of place. Furthermore, with proper care, the implant can last for more than 40 years.

Jawbone Support

When a tooth is lost, the jawbone begins to atrophy. This can not only lead to an aged, sunken appearance, but can dramatically weaken your bite, as well. Dental implants fuse directly with the jawbone, so the jaw receives necessary stimulation to retain its strength.

Natural-Looking Results

Implants provide superior support to restorations like crowns, bridges, or dentures. When restorations are not anchored to an implant, they can slide around and appear fake. Restorations attached to dental implants, however, are secure and near-perfectly resemble the appearance and function of natural teeth.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are titanium rods that serve as prosthetic tooth roots to support restorations like crowns, bridges, or dentures. Implants fuse with the jawbone over time, so they provide support that is just as secure as natural tooth roots.

Implants are surgically inserted into the gums by a dentist or oral surgeon. Because it takes some time for the titanium to fuse with the jawbone, the entire treatment process usually lasts around six months. Once the implant is securely rooted and a high-quality restoration is attached, you can live the rest of your life with a healthy-looking and fully functioning smile.

Treatment Timeline: The Dental Implant Process

Consultation

In a consultation at our dental office, our dentists can examine your teeth, gums, jaw, and medical history to determine if dental implants are right for you. If you and the doctor agree to move forward with implants, your first surgery can be scheduled.

Implant Surgery

During the first surgical procedure, the dentist or oral surgeon will make small incisions in your gums. The doctor will then place the titanium implants through the the incisions. After the implants are placed, the incisions are stitched shut.

First Healing Period

A healing period of four to six months is usually required for the titanium to properly fuse with the jawbone during a process known as osseointegration. While this is occurring, temporary restorations can be attached to your implant.

Abutment Placement

Once the first healing period is concluded, a second procedure is required for the placement of a small connector known as an abutment. The abutment is connected to the dental implant.

Second Healing Period

A shorter healing period of a few weeks is required for the gums to heal around the abutment.

Restoration Placement

Once your gums have fully healed, you can come in for one last appointment to have your final restoration attached. A crown can be used to replace a single, isolated tooth, while a bridge or denture is used to replace many missing teeth.

Smile

Now, your missing teeth are a thing of the past. Enjoy a newly restored smile that lets you speak, laugh, and chew with confidence and comfort.
